Mama, I’m Coming Home

When missing someone means missing everything about them

Music & Soul | Natalie in the Wild

Some songs reach places in our hearts that ordinary words cannot.

For me, one of those songs is Ozzy Osbourne’s Mama, I’m Coming Home.

Every time I hear it, I think of my mom.

I miss her.

And if someone were to ask me what I miss most, I don’t think I could choose just one thing.

I miss all of her.

The Part of Me That Will Always Be Her Daughter

Life has a way of making us grow up.

We become responsible. We learn to be strong. We take care of other people. We carry things we never imagined we’d have to carry.

But underneath all those years and experiences, there’s still a daughter.

A daughter who misses her mom.

There is something about that longing that doesn’t fit neatly into sentences.

Because how do you explain missing an entire person?

Not just the things they said or did.

But their very presence in your life.

When Music Becomes Memory

I love music because it has a way of finding the truth beneath everything else.

Sometimes a melody brings back a memory.

Sometimes it brings tears.

And sometimes it awakens a longing that has been quietly living inside us.

That’s what this song does for me.

It reminds me that love doesn’t become less meaningful simply because life changes.

And missing someone isn’t something we necessarily outgrow.

Sometimes we simply learn to carry that longing alongside everything else.

A Different Kind of Coming Home

I’ve written so much about returning.

Returning to faith.

Returning to peace.

Returning to the person God created me to be.

But when I hear Mama, I’m Coming Home, returning means something different.

It means my mom.

It means the part of my story that began long before I understood what life would ask of me.

And perhaps it means wishing, even for a moment, that I could close the distance between longing and belonging.

God Knows What I Mean

One thing my faith continues to teach me is that I don’t have to explain every emotion perfectly.

God knows.

He knows the love.

He knows the memories.

He knows the ache behind a simple sentence.

Psalm 34:18 reminds me that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted.

And sometimes my prayer doesn’t need to be anything more elaborate than this:

Lord, I miss my mom.

You know how much.

You know all the things I cannot put into words.

Please hold my heart in Your care.

All of Her

Maybe that’s why this song means so much to me.

Because sometimes home isn’t a place.

It’s a person.

And sometimes what we’re longing for isn’t one particular moment or memory.

It’s everything that person means to us.

I can write about healing, faith, courage, and finding my way home.

I can keep growing and becoming.

But I will always be my mother’s daughter.

And sometimes, when the music plays, that’s the part of me that speaks the loudest.

Mom, I miss you.

All of you.

With grace and gratitude,

Natalie
