Two cats. Two completely different personalities. One heart with room for both.
Tyrone was a gentleman.
He was relaxed, independent, and perfectly content to entertain himself. He was happy simply being near me.
Tyrone had little interest in the great outdoors. If I was outside, he might join me for a while. Otherwise, he preferred the comforts of home.
And then came Jonah.
Oh, Jonah.
The Cat Who Chose Me
Here’s something that still makes me smile.
I went to the very same place where I’d gotten Tyrone when I found Jonah.
I had brought my cat carrier along, and wouldn’t you know it, Jonah jumped right inside.
Just like that.
I remember thinking, Yep. That’s the cat I want.
I don’t know how else to explain it, but sometimes I swear that little cat was made just for me.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Because while Tyrone was a gentleman, Jonah is something else entirely.
Jonah is a hurricane.
A furry, four-legged hurricane who seems convinced I was put on this earth to entertain him.
My Little Shadow
Jonah loves being outside.
He explores the world with the enthusiasm of a child discovering everything for the first time.
And one of my favorite things about him is that he follows me when I go walking.
Not just to the end of the driveway.
We can walk for blocks, and there he is, following right behind me.
My shadow.
My wildcat.
I never imagined I’d have a cat who wanted to go on walks with me. Jonah seems determined to be part of whatever I’m doing.
Which is wonderful.
Most of the time.
The Great Outdoors Delivery Service
I used to leave the door open so my cat could come and go.
That was before Jonah.
Apparently, Jonah interpreted an open door as an invitation to bring the entire outdoors inside.
Squirrels. Rabbits. Grasshoppers. Birds.
Jonah is quite the hunter.
And he’s proud of his accomplishments.
Catching something isn’t enough.
He wants me to see it.
The final straw was the squirrel.
Jonah brought one into the house, and when I told him to take it outside, he had absolutely no intention of surrendering his prize.
I ordered him outside.
Jonah disagreed.
And that, my friends, is why I no longer leave the door open.
Good Boy! Good Boy!
The funny thing is, Jonah loves praise.
Whenever he brings me one of his treasures, I find myself saying, “Good boy! Good boy!”
He absolutely loves it.
And he doesn’t just bring me things from outside.
He brings me his toys, too.
He’ll proudly carry them over as if he’s presenting me with something terribly important.
And of course, I tell him what a good boy he is.
I’ve learned that toys are the treasures I’d much rather encourage him to bring home.
But there’s something endearing about how much he wants to share his discoveries with me.
Apparently, I’m his favorite audience.
Living With a Furry Toddler

When Jonah isn’t exploring or following me around the neighborhood, he’s finding new ways to entertain himself.
Unfortunately, his idea of entertainment and mine aren’t always the same.
Take washing dishes, for example.
A perfectly ordinary household chore.
Unless you live with Jonah.
While I’m standing at the sink, he’s opening cupboards.
Closing cupboards.
Digging through cupboards.
Investigating everything he can get his little paws into.
I’m just trying to get the dishes done.
Jonah apparently has an entire kitchen renovation planned.
Sometimes I think I’m living with a toddler.
A toddler with whiskers, claws, and absolutely no intention of following the household rules.
Tyrone would never.
Two Very Different Kinds of Love
Sometimes I think about how different they are.
Tyrone loved a quiet life.
Jonah is determined to make every day an adventure.
And yet, I’ve loved them both.
Not because they’re alike.
But because they’re themselves.
Losing Tyrone was one of the hardest experiences I’ve been through. Writing helped me process the worry and grief during his illness, giving me somewhere to put feelings I couldn’t always explain.
Those memories are still part of me.
Jonah hasn’t replaced Tyrone.
He couldn’t.
He’s far too busy being Jonah.
But he has brought a different kind of joy into my life.
A noisier kind.
A wilder kind.
One that sometimes involves a squirrel, an open cupboard, or an unexpected walk around the neighborhood.
The Heart Has Room
I think animals have a remarkable way of becoming part of our stories.
They enter our lives with their own personalities and peculiar little habits.
Before we know it, they’re woven into our everyday memories.
Tyrone gave me years of companionship and a love I will always carry.
Jonah is giving me new adventures, unexpected laughter, and plenty of reasons to keep the door closed.
And perhaps that’s one of the beautiful things about love.
It doesn’t have to look the same every time.
Sometimes love is quiet companionship.
Sometimes it’s a hurricane racing through the house.
And sometimes it’s a little wildcat proudly delivering his favorite toy, waiting to hear the words he loves most.
“Good boy, Jonah. Good boy.”
With love, laughter, and a little cat hair,
