Scripture Reflection: Matthew 6:7

“And when you pray, do not heap up phrases. Do not multiply words. They think they will be heard for their much speaking.”
— Matthew 6:7

Simplicity

The word itself slows me down.
It invites me to breathe.
To un-complicate.
To let go of the pressure to get everything just right—especially in my spiritual life.

Too often, I catch myself believing that prayer has to be long, poetic, or deeply emotional to “work.” But Jesus gently dismantles that idea in Matthew 6:7. God is not listening for drama or repetition. He is listening for sincerity.

Prayer is simply conversation with God.

That truth landed with quiet clarity.

I don’t need to act.

I don’t need perfect words or spiritual polish.

I just need to show up—with my whole, honest heart.

Even a breath.
Even a whisper.
Even a simple, “Help me.”

And the beautiful truth is this: He hears.
Not because of my eloquence—but because of His love.

The Holy Spirit is called our Helper, and He delights in meeting us right where we are.

He doesn’t demand complexity.

He invites simplicity.

That’s the mystery of grace.

A Prayer for Today

Lord,
Teach me to rest in the simplicity of Your presence.
Help me release performance and lean into trust.
Thank You for hearing even the smallest prayers
and loving the simplest words.

My heart be sincere
and my faith secure in Your goodness.

Amen.
