🌱 Breaking the Chains of Bitterness: From Wormwood to Grace

By Natalie Pray | July 16, 2025

“Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.”
— Hebrews 12:15 (NLT)

Bitterness is sneaky.

It doesn’t happen overnight. It begins as a tiny seed—a hurt you didn’t deserve, a wound you never asked for.

🌱 That seed gets watered by rejection, anger, and disappointment.

And then one day, something small happens, and you realize: the root is still there.

I’ve been there.

So many times I’ve thought, “I forgave them. I’m over it.” ✅
But then something triggers me, and suddenly the old feelings rise again.

That’s usually when I know—God still wants to pull something up from deep inside me.

Bitterness digs deep.

Sometimes I’ve felt it in my body, like a heaviness that won’t lift.

That’s why healing isn’t about pretending I’m fine.

It’s about letting Jesus go where no one else can see—and gently uproot what’s been hiding. 🌸

🥀 The Poison of Wormwood

Scripture calls bitterness a “poisonous root” (Hebrews 12:15), and that’s exactly what it is.

Poison seeps quietly.
It steals peace.
It strains relationships.
It can even affect our physical health.

C.S. Lewis describes this slow erosion in The Screwtape Letters:

“The safest road to hell is the gradual one—the gentle slope, soft underfoot…”

The enemy rarely attacks with something obvious. Instead, he tempts us to hold onto small offenses, unresolved anger, and buried hurt—until bitterness feels normal.

That’s what makes it so dangerous.

✨ Breaking Free

I’ve prayed about this more times than I can count.

I’ve cried through it. I’ve listened to Pastor John Eckhardt’s deliverance prayers and felt something real shift—like chains loosening and falling away.

Here’s the truth I’ve learned:

You can’t defeat bitterness with willpower.
You need God’s power.
🙌

🙏 My Prayer

Father, I give You every root of bitterness, anger, and unforgiveness in my heart.

I release every person who hurt me, and I let go of every wound.

Pull it all out, Lord—even the deep places. Fill me with Your love and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

✍️ Reflection Questions
  • Who do I still need to forgive?
  • Where have I allowed bitterness to grow in my life?
  • What truth does God speak over me that replaces the lie of rejection?

If bitterness has ever choked the joy out of your life—as it has mine—know this:

You don’t have to live that way.

God is ready to dig up every root and make your soul sweet again. đź’›
