🌼 Wildflowers Don’t Grow in Rows

A reflection on neurodivergence, learning differently, and blooming wild
By Natalie | Natalie in the Wild

Sometimes I feel like my brain just… works different.

I need space.
I need visuals.
I need to teach something to truly understand it.

And honestly?

That’s not a flaw.
That’s how I bloom.

Not everyone was made to grow in straight lines.

Some of us were born to grow wild—
off the path,
through the cracks,
in directions that don’t always make sense to the world watching.

We notice patterns others miss.
We feel things deeply.
We learn in rhythms that can’t be rushed.

And if you’ve ever felt “too much” or “not enough,”
this is your reminder:

🌸 Your intelligence isn’t lesser—it just grows in wild directions.

When Your Brain Works Different

For most of my life, I’ve felt slightly out of step with the world.

I learn visually.
I need quiet time to process conversations.
I often understand something best after I’ve explained it to someone else.

When I try to name this—when I say, “my brain just works different”—it isn’t always met with understanding.

Sometimes it’s met with impatience.
Sometimes with confusion.
Sometimes with silence.

But what if the way I learn isn’t broken?

What if it’s simply wild?

Nature Was Never Meant to Grow in Rows

Nature never intended for everything to grow in neat, orderly lines.

Some flowers bloom in full sun.
Some need shade.
Some grow fast.
Some take their time.
Some twist and reach.
Others root deep before they ever show their color.

Each one plays a role in the ecosystem.

Each one belongs.

For years, I tried to force myself into rigid rows.

I forced myself into systems and expectations that didn’t honor how my mind actually works.

I mistook difference for deficiency.

But I wasn’t made for that.

I was made to bloom differently.

And maybe you were too.

Neurodivergence Is Not a Deficit

To those of us who:

  • get overwhelmed by numbers
  • forget the middle of conversations
  • need visual cues, repetition, or creative “workarounds”

You are not less than.

Your intelligence flows through nonlinear channels—through intuition, imagery, emotion, and connection.

You pick up poetry where others see data.

You notice nuance where others skim.

The world often rewards linear thinking.

Yet, life itself rarely moves in straight lines.

This is especially true for those of us who are neurodivergent.

Working With Your Brain, Not Against It

Lately, I’ve started to see my adaptations not as shameful shortcuts, but as wisdom.

They’re not signs of failure.
They’re signs of self-knowledge.

That’s me learning how to work with my brain instead of against it.

And that’s where self-acceptance begins.

Not in becoming like everyone else.
But in becoming more fully yourself.

Let the Wildflowers Bloom

You don’t have to grow in rows.
You don’t have to bloom on command.
You don’t have to explain your wildness to anyone who can’t see its beauty.

Let the wildflowers bloom. 🌼
